Let's say you could wave a magic wand and eliminate an army from the game. What would you choose and why?
Your reasons can be completely arbitrary, based off of a dislike for fluff or simple game rules. Heck, it could be because you got stomped by that army in your most recent game or you just don't like Clicky Pencil Tim, Kurt, or PenDull!
Want to get rid of Space Marines? Fruit Pie Eldar? Here's your chance!
Me? I'd get rid of Tau in a heartbeat. As a dork gamer, I'm forced to confront enough neo-anime stuff. I don't even like Anime. If I want to watch oriental women, I'll download some porn. I never thought the Tau style fit in with everything else. Even Necrons are blocky and chunky and more suited to what I consider the feel of the 40k universe. I'd be happy to eliminate their horsey footed/bird beaked presence, and their owners, from my gaming universe entirely.
I'd be especially happy to be rid of the Tau owners; the ones that insist on using the "Tau" language names for the characters, instead of more simply saying, I move this squad of Firewarriors and shoot. My experience in this, is that most players stare blankly for a few seconds until they actually see what is moving.
No, we get, I move my "Shahsor' Guellsas" or my SBX-2342's... WTF? It's like running into gamers that insist on communicating in Klingon.

as opposed to playing anyone with the new deamons army?
face it, if you don't play the army, it's all klingon. until I got my hands on dark eldar, I had no idea what a blaster, lance, disintegrator or mandrake looked like, or what they did. that doesn't bother me at all playing against it.
for the benifit of the game, I think I'd get rid of marines- loyal and chaos. that or price them out of competativeness. because 70% of their consumers play marines, the game has, in my mind, really become toughness 4 based. this saddens me, because so mane of their armies (6? more?) are base toughness 3.
if the majority of your games were fought against toughness 3 models using toughness 3 models, think of how that would change your game!
instead, for most, it's just a weird bonus that you get to wound on three's against em.
and for those poor few who consitantly play t3 models, your reliance on heavy weapons to get the job done (how many ap3 wpns in the average gaurd army? eldar? tau?) is staggering.
boo on marines. now, to get my second chapter started...

Well, I have always loved the fluff for 40k (even though I usually bitch about GW and the rules) I would have to say the one army I would love to see banashed would be the Tyranids.
Why you may ask?
Answer: Because I hate a lot of the models. I think GW does a good job on most of their models, in fact I even like the Tau stuff, though I kind of aggree with the above comments, but when it comes to the Tyranids, I am sorry, I just think the models look way too goofy.
I say this because I can't stand that these creatures have appendages that look like guns. What the hell???? I don't want my bio bug to look like it has a gun! When I think of Tyranids, I think of the Alien movies and Starship troopers. A lot of the GW models just don't do this for me.
Hope this makes sense, and if you like the models, go for it!

I'd get rid of demons because they rely too much on summoning and deepstriking.
I'd get rid of most of the chapters. Their bonuses seem more extreme than some of the xenos stuff.
I'd vote for the Tau as well. Not so much of an elimination, but a concentration on the objective. Are you making an army of hired help? Indentured servitude? Then the whole army should be themed around that, not just a few units. I think they lack flavor and seem "tacked on" for some reason. An appeal to the anime.
I think orks should be eliminated, just so I can go apeshitbonkers.

I'd get rid of Marines like Twaim says, as I thnk they falsely skew what we consider to be the "normal trooper" in the 40k environment.
though I might also get rid of necrons because WBB annoys me so much...and Orks so Mark would go ApeShitBonkers.

Lost and Damned. I can't stand that Champion with the power fist who is untouchable inside a squad of 30 mutants, and Peter always takes three of those squads, and... (poof!)
Hey! It worked!

Seriously though... it's gotta be a toss-up between Necrons and Sisters.
Probably Necrons, for one simple fact. The Monolith. Oh how I HATE the Monolith. It is easily 40 points cheaper than it should be and is nigh indestructable. And Destroyers. Great Googally Moogally, I hate them too. And the C'Tan. Fuck. Tack on really shooty, really tough infantry models who are able to "come back to life" on a 4+ and you've got an army i just can't stand. Oh, and if you manage to not roll so hot on your WBB rolls, just send them through a Monolith! Did I mention how much I HATE the Monolith???
Sisters just bug me because 1.) They are simply female space marines and sort of seem like an attempt to try to get girls into the game (and the very few females I've seen play 40k are never playing SoB).
2.) Their fluff seems unimaginative and unecessary what with all the other Imperial organizations floating around.
3.) The whole Faith point thing is hard to play against. How many you get, when, why, and how they can be used are things that the opponent will never know unless they play Sisters themselves, and I can't handle playing against an opponent who has a bunch of items to keep track of in their army. All I need to hear is, "I have, umm... 5? Faith points this turn, okay, here we go" from an opponent to raise my suspicions as to how the rest of the game is going to go.
The Sisters just aren't needed in 40k. And the Necrons, well they're just broken in my opinion.
Screw it, get rid of them both and give me a race that is well rounded game-wise and feels like it should be included in the universe fluff-wise. Put the Skaven in space or somthing.

I'd axe the necrons, even though I really like the warriors models. The reasons are-
1.) their rules break the game fundamentally (moving, shooting, getting wounded, transports- right across the boards) and there is no real drawback or risk to the army to balance them.
2.) Their fluff is stupid, and the GW design team has never really filled them out.
3.) Some asshole always wants to play them in the Big Game and in any story-driven 40k project they don't fit. There's the reason GW ignores their storyline --- they have none.
Also- I'd cut the Ultramarines because I hate boyscouts.

True-
I'd actually add about ten races, just all kinds of weird aliens and evil shit. Let people play whatever models they want. Leave it up to the players to balance their own games, army design-wise, and quit listening to the complaining anonymous internet babies.

Brother, there's a world of differnce between a unique character and referring to entire units in the Tau as "Shau phlem guns" or "XV-898964.3's. I'm not talking about the stats for Marneius Calgar or Abbadon.

so you'd rather every sgt upgrade be refered to as the same title? every heavy weapon?
yes, it's easier to refer to the leader of a tau squad as a sgt... but he's not, he's a shau'sui'kau guy. and sisters have superiors, and chaos aspiring champions. yeah, it can get annoying for you that the player across the table is refering to his upgrades with the titles given by his own codex instead of yours.... but if its the only army he plays, isn't he thinking the same thing when you refer to his fusion guns as melta guns?
no one complains when the ork player develops a poor british accent and refers to his squad leaders as nobs.
I guess, unless one is singleing out tim (in which case I completely endorse the arguement) I dont know why tau get singled out for this perticularity rather than any other list. is it just cause you don't play tau often? consistantly lose to their funny named squads? their names are harder for you to say than 'exarch' or 'succubis' ?

i think daemon armies. i mean, cmon, an entire army that deep strikes? how crazy! who the hell else can do that, other than a marine drop pod army?! (oh, shit, did i just say that? )
seriously, though, i think tau seem kind of on the fringe of the fluff. every time i read their codex, i'm thinking, do they really fit into the 40k universe?
the other army is not really an army, more a collage of them. either consolidate daemonhunters/witch hunters/sisters into a single codex, or drop them all. all kinds of little pieces floating around, loosely associated by the inquisitor back story, and in many ways very redundant. wtf? i am saying this even though i have several DH models.

Actually, Kurt is right.
The Tau are the only race who use non-english words to describe their characters, as far as I know. And it is more than annoying. It is downright confusing. If we use the english translation for the squad name (i.e. "Firewarriors") then why do we have to use the "Tau" name for the sgt? Shas'el'o or whatever the hell it is. If we must call the sgt. Shal'el'krit then why don't we have to call Firewarriors "Fin-fang-foom" or whatever their "Tau" name is???
Do we call Lictors, "Click-clack-ghiuckuluk"? No, they are Lictors.
Do we call Necron Lords "00101100010101110" ??? No, they are Lords.
Because we are not Tyrannids, and we are not Necrons, we are english speaking, drunken idiots, and we attempt to use the language we've been given, even when playing our silly games. So let's not muck things up by having to refer to shas'el'o'shamalama or some such thing. Let's call the sgts. "Oath Bearers" or something and the commanders "Battle Masters" or some such crap. Hell even the Imperial Japanese (which the Tau are obviously modelled after) still had Admirals, Field Marshals, and Generals.
