Or better yet, a crane hoisting an I beam with a few grots sitting on it eating lunch, you know like in the old days when the steel fitters would do that when they were working on the empire state building!

| I think you need to model an Ork Vader that has come to the Stompa factory to put them back on schedule...

You're right, I'm going to be working a little bit on the crane today. I have to work some more on the outside plates and gubbins and stuff, but yeah, there is going to be a crane set up on somewhere on the taller corner of this beast. Complete with grot workers sitting just like you said .
I am having some difficulty deciding on what type of glue to use on this thing though. The mockup is using the stiktact right now, but I'm a little worried about the foam core melting when I actually glue this up. Elmers or PVA watered down, would seem to be the right idea, but I have issues with how those are going to stand up to the test of playing on this thing. I was thinking about using some kind of caulk that's good for foamboard too. Any other ideas, I'm open for anything?

I totally like this idea, but need to name him somthing different than 'Ork Vader'. Hell, I mioght actually set up a sound system to play the vader music when he actually shows up on the site. I am trying to get a light system that actually works on this thing, but may scrap that idea as that would require me making some kind of purchase that will cost too much for what this is worth.
Again, any ideas or hookups would be appreciated, I'm really honing my skills on this and would be open to just about anything.

If there are eldar on the table, he might just blow himself up before he gets to do anything. I love it though, he can be the commander of the factory, although I had a big mek in mind, but this will do good also.

cutting the doors out and making them work is going to be a trick. Luckily, I have a drill, a dremel, and a plan!

As I was amassing the bulkheads for the refit on this thing, an Idea came to me..... I am just going to have to paint up the bulkhead first with some future coats before priming, painting and gluing on the outside parts. I think 3 coats of future wax though the airbrush should just about do it before priming, and then I should be able to use whatever glue I want for the rest of it. Its an idea I got from the forgeworld book and other sources that use this kind of foamcore.
That makes this build a little bit more than what I had originally planned, but it should work.

| Test your spray on a piece of styrofoam to make sure whatever it is you are spraying won't eat the styrofoam.

That's the plan, but I'm pretty confident about the outcome anyway. I've been doing quite a bit of research on the topic lately and have found a lot of interesting info on the subject. I am going for it. Hell if it doesn't work out, then I'll just build the damn thing the same way using plasticard or plexi or maybe even go and get some foamboard. We'll see.

Boy am I glad I tested things first. The foam simply sucked up the future and when I sprayed it down with primer, we began the normal melting process . I'm going to try out some latex paint this time on another piece and then future coat it and then try out some super glue and see if it starts melting. If this one doesn't work I'm going to have to start over from scratch, maybe using some plasticard and other items.
Long day so far.

I think this is going to continually be your downfall, this "base" of cheap packing styrofoam. Whether or not it is the paint, or the massive amount of cranes, plasticard and metal tubing attatched to it, even the most basic of packing foam terrain falls apart easily.
That platform is all good and fine now, until someone has the bright idea of landing a monolith or disembarking a metal dread from a drop pod.
Things you have done with the MDF (or whatever the hell that board is in your basement) and a nailgun have really worked out for you in the past, me thinks. Consider building a "box" around the factory that you can attatch all the platforms and gubbins to. You could paint the cool "pit" in the middle with latex paint, and have it inserted into the middle of the walls. Then you could really play with the walls, scar them up, staple on hardware cloth, drill holes and use whatever paint you wanted.
Just my opinion. I always look at packing foam and think: ooo what a cool shape! but I have to stop myself. We have to remember that as soon as it gets bumped by a medium size pair of dice it will be losing its paint.

Well.......... The latex paint with future over it has worked! Its repelling the superglue, however after taking into consideration Pendull's wise comments, I'm going to scrap this first idea completely as far as the foam base goes. I'm going to blame it on paint flake.
Back to the drawing board.

Eth,
This looks to be an incredibly difficult and ambitious undertaking on your part. You're bound to run into obstacles that seem over-whelming. I commend you for having the gonnads to make this vision of yours a reality. You may be back at the drawing board phase, but I salute you anyway! Awesome Job, dude! Keep up the good work. From what I've seen of your initial mistakes, once you get this thing built up properly it's going to look fantastic.
Excellent work. Keep it up.

Thanks a lot dude. I haven't really had that much time to continue the process cause of thanksgiving, but I have gotten passed the foam board issue. The new look will be in at least 2 pieces, if not 3, and it will be an even larger profile than the original specs. I'll get picts up soon.

I am in love with this right now. It's going to be 5 pieces! The crane will work and is removable. The towers are going to look tits when I glue on the bulkheads. The center piece actually turns and I'm going to have some grots pushing it in a circle.
Comments welcome!
